Voici une rencontre de circonstances, en même temps qu’un rendez-vous hors du temps. Au moment de la sortie du film de Jean-Luc Godard « Je vous salue Marie », le pape de la Nouvelle Vague et le fidèle du Pape polonais se rencontrent, à l’ombre des tours de Notre-Dame, pour disputer du dogme de l’Immaculée Conception. L’entretien historique, filmé par Jean-Paul Fargier, se déroule le 21 novembre 1984, à la demande de Philippe Sollers, jours de la fête catholique de la Présentation de Marie au Temple.
Les propos, purement théologiques au début, comme peuvent en échanger un catholique cultivé et un protestant invétéré, s’envolent rapidement vers d’autres sujets : Vénus, la Lune, les actrices, Artaud, Bataille, Bach, Heidegger, Luther et le sac de Rome, le rôle des vents dans les cantons suisses, la lecture à haute voix, l’hystérie, la télévision, le rire…
Par delà les chapelles, l’œcuménisme du goût finit par triompher.

Here is a meeting of the minds that is at once a question of circumstance and a timeless encounter. Just as the film “Hail Mary” by Jean-Luc Godard was coming out, the pope of the New Wave of French cinema and the loyal supporter of the Polish pope came together, in the shadow of the gargoyles of Notre-Dame in Paris, to argue about the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. At Philippe Sollers’ request, this historic conversation, filmed par Jean-Paul Fargier, took place on November 21, 1984, the Catholic feast day of the Presentation of Mary in the Temple.
Their exchange was purely theological at the start, as is fitting between a cultivated Catholic and an inveterate Protestant. The discussion however quickly expanded to embrace other subjects including Venus, the moon, actresses, Artaud, Bataille, Bach, Heidegger, Luther and the sack of Rome, the role of wind in Swiss cantons, reading out loud, hysteria, television, and laughter, among others…
The ecumenism of intelligence has the final word, triumphing above and beyond differing schools of thought. And ends with an Ave.
