This double DVD is dedicated to the work of French artist Daniel Buren: it is a reissue of the Daniel Buren DVD in the “Works & Process” collection released in 2002 and out of print today.

This new edition offers all the films on the DVD in English subtitles. The two DVDs offer a total of nearly 4 hours of program consisting of 12 films including five documentaries, original and unpublished documents produced by Daniel Buren as well as audiovisual works by the artist. This publication is supplemented by several unpublished documents of the artist such as “One Year of Ballets in Manhattan” on the performances of Daniel Buren in the streets of New York in 1978 as well as two documentary films directed by Gilles Coudert on the exhibition “The Eye of the Storm” by Daniel Buren at the Guggenheim in New York in 2005 and on the “Allegro Vivace” exhibition currently being held in Baden-Baden, Germany.

The second DVD offers in its entirety the performance “Couleurs superposées, Acte XIII” organized in 2009 on the occasion of “Constellation”, a foreshadowing event of the Centre Pompidou-Metz.

 

 

DVD 1

1 – Allegro Vivace (2011 / 13 min.)

This film presents the latest exhibition by artist Daniel Buren “Allegro Vivace” at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden. Daniel Buren tells us about his intentions and how his work enters into dialogue with the museum. Cora von Pape, curator of the exhibition, shares her thoughts on this project with us.

2 – The eye of the storm (2005 / 13 min.)

This film presents the exhibition of artist Daniel Buren which took place at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in June 2005. The eye of the storm is a site-specific installation, in which the artist questions in his own way this iconic building in the history of architecture built by Frank Lloyd Wright.

 

3 – Vit et travaille in situ (2002 / 26 min.)

This documentary retraces Daniel Buren‘s journey through an interview with Pierre-André Boutang carried out during the assembly of the exhibition Le Musée qui n’existait pas at the Centre Pompidou in 2002. This discussion is an opportunity to understand itinerary of the artist but also the character. Daniel Buren discusses many of his in situ interventions and focuses more specifically on the relationship he has maintained with the audiovisual tool throughout his career, illustrated by unpublished archives.

 

4 – The Museum that did not exist (2002 / 30 min.)

From the first meetings in the architectural firm until the day after the opening, this documentary follows Daniel Buren as well as the various stakeholders (architects, commissioners, workers, etc.) throughout the process of designing and creating the exhibition The Museum that did not exist at the Center Pompidou in 2002. This documentary allows you to experience the work in the process of being constituted, to perceive the choices being made, to feel the doubts, the uncertainties, the moments of enthusiasm, understand the directions in which the artist engages throughout this creation which questions the museum in depth.

5 – Les Deux Plateaux (2002 / 8 min.)

Guy Lelong, art critic and author of the book on the work of Daniel Buren published in 2001 by Flammarion, shares with us his analysis of Daniel Buren’s public work at the Palais Royal. A deciphering of this particularly famous and popular work as “Buren columns” but whose system remains unknown to many.

 

6 – Daniel Buren / Jean Nouvel (excerpts) (1994 / 6 min.)

Excerpts from the interview filmed in 1994 during the cycle of “Art and Architecture” Grandes Conférences organized by the Centre de Création Contemporaine and the Université François Rabelais in Tours. Daniel Buren dialogues with architect Jean Nouvel and presents his thoughts on the development of museums and public space.

 

7 – Watch the doors, please! (1980 / 13 min.)
A film by Daniel Buren

In this live-edited film, Daniel Buren documents his own work on train doors passing under the windows of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1980.

 

8 – One Year of Ballets in Manhattan (1978 / 5 min.)
A film by Christopher d’Arcangelo

Unpublished documents shot in super-8 by artist Christopher D’Arcangelo, then assistant to Daniel Buren. Recently rediscovered in his archives, these films, shot in New York in 1978, show a 12-part performance by Daniel Buren where people walk with colorful striped signs on the streets of New York

 

9 – Interruption (1969 / 20 min.)
A film by Daniel Buren

Interruption is composed of eight Super-8 films, produced by Daniel Buren for his exhibition at the Yvon Lambert gallery in 1969 and shown in a scopitone. The artist delivers to us a veritable manifesto and a sharp critique of the state of art at the time. What is essentially to say? / Biography / Criticism and faith / Topography / Classifieds / Focus / Temperatures recorded under shelter… / The lesson of playing cards.

 

10 – Mexique (1959 / 30 min.)
A film by Daniel Buren

Documentary film directed by Daniel Buren when he wanted to start a career as a filmmaker. Besides the documentary interest of this film, everyone will be able to perceive the beginnings of a work to come (alternation of black and white and color, play of contrasts, the first tapes filmed on a market, etc.).

Performance (1982-2009) re-enacted at the Metz-Métropole Opera Theatre during “Constellation” the Centre Pompidou-Metz‘s sneak preview event.
