Kimsooja, Thread Roots, Leiden

A film by Gilles Coudert

Year of production: 2024

Duration: 10 min.

English version with French subtitles

Korean artist Kimsooja presents “Thread Roots”, her first solo exhibition in the Netherlands in the city of Leiden at the Lakenhal Museum.
Kimsooja revisits the cultural and economic history of the city of Leiden which has its roots in the textile industry. She has created a new work in which samples of Korean fabrics provide the starting point for a dialogue with pieces from the Leiden textile collection.
Opposite the museum, above the canal, Kimsooja also designed a public work consisting of arches that are reflected in the water, functioning like a needle and thread that connects the city and its inhabitants.
The artist Kimsooja shares her intentions with us alongside director Tanja Elstgeest and curator Nicole Roepers.
